When to See a Psychologist
To transform discomfort into awareness and awareness into new existential possibilities, turning a crisis into an opportunity. Therapy requires commitment like any well-done job: through dialogue with the therapist, one seeks to understand how the past negatively influences our present, as well as to identify our unexpressed potential. Often, our most problematic or neglected aspects can become the way out of our distress, whatever it may be. In individual psychotherapy, listening, empathetic understanding, and the shared development of a path aimed at facilitating the patient’s personal and relational growth are of fundamental importance. Sessions are aimed at addressing, understanding, and resolving the factors leading to distress.
What a Psychologist Can Do
- Identify the causes of symptoms that make life difficult (anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, etc.)
- Process grief or trauma
- Rediscover joy in life despite life’s difficulties
- Face reality without being overwhelmed
- Recognize the suffering child within each of us
- Learn to defend oneself
- Overcome certain forms of dependency
- Understand one’s weaknesses and limitations
- Recognize and accept parts of oneself that have previously been ignored or unacknowledged, which have made life unnecessarily difficult
- Understand one’s desires and inclinations
